My work does not fit neatly into any one mode but rather floats between experimental photograms, digitally constructed images, to straight photographs. However, the motives for production remain linked, whether I am traveling halfway around the world to be alone because I am saudade (have extreme longing and melancholy) as I did for Scandinavia+, or taking those feelings and attempting to form alternative communities while questioning if my intentions are altruistic in The Records Project (TRP), or turning my curiosities away from the ephemeral to focus on the physical as seen in the xcps series.
Saudade is a Portuguese/Gaelic word that has no direct English translation but is described as a deep emotional state of melancholia and longing for a person or thing that is absent, with the possibility of willfully holding on to such feelings in spite of the fact the person or thing is likely to not return. This would become my central motive for Scandinavia+. In the summer of 2015, I went on a ten-week solo journey through the Nordic countries. To avoid misleading the read of the images with things such as foreign words, landmarks or local customs, I refrained from including signifiers that would clearly locate the pictures geographically. Instead, I chose to make photographs that could have been made anywhere. This emptying of information led me to making images with visual and contextual information that was analogous, both consciously and subconsciously, to my mental and emotional state.
