Shirin Towfiq is a San Diego based conceptual artist of Iranian descent that works in textile, conceptual clothing, installation, and socially engaged art. Her work addresses cultural, feminine, and interpersonal relationships. She received a BA in Practice of Art from University of California Berkeley. Shirin is the founder of So Sew Co, an organization that inspires creativity and builds community through alternative sewing projects and art workshops.

Textiles have been a fundamental part of human life since the beginning of civilization, and the methods and materials used to make them have expanded enormously, while the functions of textiles have remained the same. The history of textile arts is also the history of international trade.
Embroidery is the handicraft of decorating fabric or other materials with needle and thread or yarn. Embroidery may also incorporate other materials such as, pearls, beads, quills, and sequins. Today, embroidery is used both traditionally and in juxtaposition with non-traditional materials. Bridge Instructor and Artist Siobhan Arnold does embroidery on trash bags and other non-fabric materials.
